As a military kid, I spent my childhood traveling the world. It was awesome! It was also kind of lonely, and I never felt like I had a hometown. Every time I moved, I'd more or less get to reinvent myself and try to fit into a whole new ecosystem of different peoples, places, and cultures. Once in a new place, the traditions and memories of the old place would start to fade away. I'd always been interested in art, the colors and shapes were interesting to me as a small kid. And so somewhere along the way I started painting the places I've been. It was a way of preserving the memories of that place, so I could hold onto them forever. They themselves became their own version of my "hometown". And it made me look deeper at a place...notice the nuanced color shifts of a sunset, the curves of a mountainside. My love and appreciation for a place becomes deep-rooted after spending so much time connecting with it artistically. To this day, I still love traveling and adventuring. And the places I've traveled to, the places I've hiked or camped or rafted in, often become the inspiration for my work. I call it "Connecting to place through paint."
